Dear Boris,
thank you for your invite to talk in
Munich. Here is my text for the lecture:
Astonishingly, Stefan Sagmeister has
only learned twenty or so things in
his life so far. But he did manage to
publish these personal maxims all over
the world, in spaces normally occupies
by advertisements and promotions:
as billboards, projections,
light-boxes, magazine spreads, annual report covers,
fashion brochures, and, recently, as giant
inflatable monkeys. In this presentation
Sagmeister
throws his diary, a lot of
design, and a little art together with a
pinch of psychology and a dash of
happiness into a blender and pushes the
button. It tastes surprisingly yummy.

Referent
Stefan Sagmeister (*1962)
studierte Grafik und Design an
der Universität für angewandte
Kunst Wien. Für die letzten
Semester ging er mit einem
Fulbright-Stipendium ans Pratt
Institute in New York. Mit 29
Jahren zieht er nach Hong Kong,
um bei der Werbeagentur Leo
Burnett zu arbeiten. 1993 ist er
zurück in New York und gründet
nach einer kurzen Zeit in Tibor
Kalman’s Studio Sagmeister Inc.
Das I.D. Magazine schreibt über
seine Arbeit: “Sagmeister’s CD
package designs are what poetry
is to prose: Distilled, intense,
cunning, evocative and utterly
complete. His inventions have
set a new standard.” Sagmeister
wurde bereits fünfmal für den
Grammy nominiert und erhielt
ihn für das Albumdesign von
“Once In A Lifetime” der Talking
Heads.
